FAQs

  • In Western Australia, South Australia and Kangaroo Island, 4WD’s are permitted to travel on unsealed government gazetted roads.
  • In QLD, 4WDs are permitted to travel to Cooktown, however some travel via the Bloomfield Track, Gulf Track, Peninsula Developmental Road and Telegraph Track is not permitted and conditions apply when travelling in these areas.
  • In QLD, selected 4WD’s can be driven on Morton and Stradbroke Islands on application.
  • Beach travel is not permitted on ANY beaches.
  • In the northern regions of Australia, there is no reduced liability option for 4WD vehicles when travelling on the Tanami Track, Canning Stock Route, Gulf Track, Cape York Peninsula Track and Mitchell Plateau.

4WD towing capacities vary widely between make and models. If your vehicle comes with a tow bar, you need to ensure you always follow the Manufacturer’s guidelines. Please note, the insurance cover for the vehicle does not extend to the item being towed nor if the load being towed is more than the vehicle is designed for.

  • AWD — a transmission system that sends power to both the front and rear axle – it does not alternate with 2WD. Systems vary, but generally the AWD system relies on the vehicle’s computer to determine which of the 4 wheels needs power and traction, without the driver’s input. This ability to distribute torque front and rear can help improve fuel economy and helps keep the vehicle planted on the road when turning at high speeds.
  • 4WD – similar to AWD, both front and rear axles receive power at the same time. However it differs in that the 4WD system sends equal amounts to the front and rear instead of allocating power to certain wheels through a more complex system. 4WD are specifically made for off-road driving or extreme conditions where one or more tyres experience a complete loss of traction.
  • Full time 4WD – a vehicular system that drives all 4 wheels, all the time.
  • Part time 4WD – a vehicular system that allows the driver to turn on the 4WD only when needed. On regular driving surfaces without the 4WD engaged, it works just like a rear-driven 2WD vehicle. One of the big benefits of part-time 4WD vehicles is increased fuel economy.
