Starting as an aircraft research company named Fuji Heavy Industries in 1915, they would reorganize to become the chief aircraft manufacturer during World War II. After the war, they pivoted towards motorized transportation, thus creating the Fuji Rabbit, which was actually an airplane turned into a scooter.
Subaru is Japanese for the Pleiades star cluster in the constellation Taurus. These stars are also known as the ‘seven sisters’ – the seven daughters of Atlas that were turned into stars in Greek mythology. The original Subaru logo however, only included six stars. Many believe this is because Fuji Heavy Industries was formed from capital contributions from five companies however others testify it’s because the seventh star is rarely visible in the Japanese night sky.
Subaru is shrouded in a curious but alluring mystique. Arguably most famous for its glorious Impreza rally cars of the Nineties, they have made an impact on pop culture with iconic appearances in several blockbuster movies including Cannonball Run (1981), Born to Race (2011), Kingsman The Secret Service (2014), Lethal Weapon (2017) Baby Driver (2017) and The Fast and Furious franchise (2009-2023).
Subaru uses a boxer engine in every vehicle. This innovative engine named after the horizontal movements of its pistons – like a boxer throwing punches in the ring – lowers the engine’s centre of gravity, allowing for more responsive performances and better fuel economy.
Subaru is a leader when it comes to sustainability and recycling efficiency. Throughout the world, they have numerous zero waste factories; sending no materials to landfills and they are establishing themselves as a major player in the EV and Hybrid markets.
In addition to being at the forefront of the automotive industry, Subaru has been a long-time partner of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Since 2008, Subaru has donated more than $51 million to aid in the fight against animal abuse.
